This is not a city like any other!
It’s the magical city of the Carnival, the city of the terrifying King of the Night with his demons and the good Queen of the Day with her army of animals and birds. Eleven year old Kostas and eight year old Ageliki leave their village to visit the carnival dressed with the costumes that their mother has sewn. The King of the Night gets jealous of their costumes and abducts them to find their secret. The two smart children fight back with a lot of courage. Will they succeed, in this wondrous and funny tale full of adventures and music?
The Carnival of Miracles and Monsters is a massive Greek-Canadian co-production of Chroma Musika (Montreal) and the renowned Music House Filippos Nakas (Athens) written by Mihalis Makropoulos and set to music by Jiannis Georgantelis who also wrote the lyrics.
40 children of Hellenic heritage from Montreal and Laval were chosen, through auditions, to form a chorus that sings in the CD that accompanies the book with the Montreal Pop Symphonic Orchestra (Mark Dharmaratnam conducting). Under the vocal guidance of soloist Maria Diamantis and the direction of soloist Dimitris Ilias the young songbirds not only had the opportunity to discover the magic of the symphonic orchestra from the performer’s point of view, but also to learn how such a super-production is put together from recording and mixing to the illustrations and printing. The recording took place in Oscar Peterson Concert Hall with Dr. Mark Corwin professor of the Concordia University Music Department being responsible for recording, mixing and editing. Katerina Veroutsos, graduate of Concordia Fine Arts and one of Athens foremost children’s books illustrators, gave life to the book while Makis Papagavriil narrates with his youthful voice. The composer, the narrator and soloist Marialena Spinoula are flying in from Athens for the launch of the Book/CD.
The Hellenic Community of Montreal, most of the children of the chorus come from Socrates Schools, in collaboration with the General Consulate of Greece in Montreal invite all Montrealers to the launch of the book/CD on November 22nd 2008 at 6.00pm in the Hall of the Hellenic Community Centre 5757 Wilderton Avenue. There will be excerpts from the CD of the book sung by the Kid’s chorus and the soloists with the participation of the narrator.
